Our Memories of Denis

Created by Helen 3 years ago

We’ve been reflecting on what a wonderful man Denis was.  He came to Rob’s and my wedding — 44 years ago in February 2021. He was a terrific boss and it was wonderful the way he and Dolores were so inclusive. I remember especially when Dolores received her MBE in 1978 — we were all invited over to Swinger Hill to celebrate the wonderful recognition for her hard work. Siobhan was quite young. Denis was, as usual, the perfect host; but he was also regaling in the fact that he’d now become “Mr Dolores”, since he didn’t have anything that flash!  Dolores was, as expected, dismissive of such accolades and was controlling the kitchen.

As I recollect (and Tony Butler, et al will know better) Denis was an integral part of the establishment of the AFP and also the Protective Services Co-ordination Unit.  He did lots of what I call “spook work” and was excellent at marshalling troops and bringing folk together — particularly those who were less than keen to come together.  I can still see him sitting in his office, by then on the ground floor in East Block, with his pipe in his mouth, on the phone and organising a catch-up with someone-or-other.  Always with a smile on his face.

We had not managed to catch up in the UK, but had intended to on our next trip.  Alas, another lesson in not deferring catch-ups.  We had, however, caught up on e-mail, so I’m pleased there had been an electronic catch-up.

Hold on to your wonderful memories Siobhan — some will make you laugh hysterically and others will make you cry uncontrollably.  Both are fine and you should be immensely proud of your Dad.  He was a good and decent man who many looked up to.  He was a wonderful public servant.  He was a wonderful boss.  And a great friend and mentor to many.

We hope Bridget is gaining strength and will gain strength by being able to celebrate Denis’ life next Thursday.

We look forward to being able to celebrate his life when travel is easier.
